The Compass is by sailors, for sailors — and for all those who
love the Caribbean sea and shore.
Managing Director Tom Hopman and Editor Sally Erdle, both US-born,
arrived by yacht in the Caribbean in the early 1970s. They have cruised
the Caribbean extensively, raced, worked in the Caribbean charter
trade, and completed a five-and-a-half-year, double-handed
circumnavigation aboard their Rhodes 41 sloop, So Long. On returning to
the Caribbean at the end of their circumnavigation, they launched the
Compass in 1995.
Production Manager Wilfred Dederer left a career in
photojournalism in Germany and sailed to the Caribbean in 1983.
Captivated, he returned permanently in 1988, and worked as a yacht
skipper, photographer and newspaper editor. He joined the Compass in
1998.
Assistant Editor Elaine Ollivierre came from England to Bequia
as a volunteer teacher in the 1970s and stayed after meeting her
husband, Orbin, a fisherman, boatbuilder and Commodore of the Bequia
Sailing Club. She joined the Compass in 2003.
